Overview

In suspected cases of diabetes and in any case of emergency, urgent blood glucose estimation is necessary. Also, in cases of severe hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia, regular check of blood glucose level is necessary as both conditions can result in loss of consciousness (coma). Blood glucose level can be estimated using a machine called Accu-chek meter. This is used for quantitative blood glucose test in fresh capillary blood. The meter is used together with the test strips

Objectives

By the end of this course, one will to know the following

What blood glucose is all about
What an accu-chek meter is used for and the operating procedure
Discuss when and where necessary to do the test
Know the precautionary measures to take in handling an Accu-chek meter to avoid wrong results and to prevent the meter from developing faults
know the interpretation of the test result, which will enable him /her to know when the sugar level is low (hypoglycemia) or high (hyperglycemia)

The course is suitable for every individual, both health professionals and otherwise. This is because, in an outdoor activities for example, an athlete may faint after doing some exercise as a result of hypoglycemia and only this kind of knowledge can save such an individual

ANYIAM EMMANUEL CHIDOZIE

Anyiam Emmanuel Chidozie from Abajah in Nwangele Local Government Area of Imo State, born on 4th October, 1975, attended China Town Primary School and obtained First School Leaving Certificate in 1981. Attended federal Government College and Alhuda Huda College Zaria and obtained WASC in 1986 and 1987 respectively. I attended University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital and obtained AIMLT in Medical Parasitology and Ambrose Alli University Ekpoma for Masters Degree in Medical Microbiology in 1997 and 2000 respectively.
