DEAR DOCTOR EZEUGWU: I am a diabetic. How can I reduce my diabetes complication risk for this year 2016?
DEAR PATIENT: Excellent question! As you know, Diabetes can damage your eyes, heart, kidneys, blood vessels and nerves etc. Many of these complications are serious, and are made worse when your blood sugar is uncontrolled. Therefore, controlling your blood sugar is vital, and my advice to you include the following: eat right, exercise daily, keep your hemoglobin A1C to about less than 6.5 and quit smoking (if you are a smoker). Additionally, work with your doctor to control your cholesterol, blood pressure and to receive (evidence based) medications that are recommended for the protection of your organs from being damaged by diabetes.
